Recoleta
Home to the great and good of Argentina (in both life and death), Recoleta is a wonderful place to simply walk around taking in the atmosphere. The centrepiece, and a must-see on any visit to Buenos Aires is the magnificient cemetery, which was originally the garden of the neighbouring church & convent Nuestra Señora de Pilar. Converted to a cemetery in 1822, it became the resting place of some of the greatest families of the time.
Known primarily for containing the grave of Evita Peron, it has so much more to offer than just this, and its narrow alleys and beautiful art deco vaults (all 4,800 graves are above ground) make it one of the most serene and memorable places in Buenos Aires.
The rest of Recoleta is, for the main part, equally peaceful, if a little more lively. Home to numerous museums, including the Museo de Bellas Artes, the Recoleta Design Centre and the stately (and exclusive) Avenida Alvear, it’s a great place to lose oneself for a few hours, seeing how the other half live (and die).
